When selecting a contractor, do you want someone who just enjoys building things? When he was young, he built birdhouses & miniature soapbox derby cars. When he got older, he built doghouses and toy glider planes. Then he watched some YouTube videos about building houses and started a business called “American House Experts.”
He is a good orator, convincing many of his abilities. His company name asserts his expertise. He even read some books about building and has all the latest tools. How could you go wrong choosing this guy to build your forever home?
Or how about your favorite sports team? Could you be an enthusiastic fan, knowing that all their training came from watching inspirational YouTube videos and reading books?
YouTube videos and books are great tools. But they do not provide all the training you would want from someone as important as your builder, or as unimportant as a sports team.
Life safety operators must invest in training. There are many training methods. Each of them provides critical skills development; none of them provides the whole package. There are online resources, local trainers, and conferences.
Think About it
Local trainers are great. But you are only getting that trainer's opinions. Sometimes that is good, and sometimes it isn’t. In fact, some of it is dangerous. The same is true of any training method you choose. Find reliable ones and use them.
The FBSN’s annual Security Operations Summit (SOS) event starts with 2 days of optional intensive classes, each lasting at least 4 hours. Those classes are hands-on and physical. Then there are 2-1/2 more days of lectures and presentations. All presenters have experiences matching their presentations. With 40 speakers teaching over 40 topics in 4-1/2 days, there is nothing like it. Every church should send at least 2 people to get through each course.
The SOS is a vetted attendee event. The people partaking of the courses with you have proven they are involved in this great endeavor of church security.
Yes, we really need training. Come to SOS.26 and experience the most effective and comprehensive annual event for faith-based security operations.
Just the contacts you will make are worth the effort. We are nearing 400 registrants already from 40 states. With nearly 3 months to register, we expect over 500 vetted operators in this great endeavor of church and parachurch security.
