There is danger all around us. I had a conversation this week with Dr. Richard Hughbank, one of our nation's longest enduring experts on terrorism. I have known him for 20 years or more, and it was his driving interest before I knew him.
I asked Dr. Hughbank if we are in an elevated state of danger from terrorism at American Churches right now.
He said in his opinion, it is a higher threat level now than it was on or since 9/11/2001.
American churches especially are in a time of elevated threat. While many other non-governmental (and governmental) agencies recognize this same season, churches must pay special attention right now.
We have three important things coming up.
ONE: Palm Sunday is coming up on 3/29/26. This is among the top three meaningful anniversaries to us as Christ followers. This is the remembrance celebration of the triumphal entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem.
TWO: Resurrection Sunday (April 5th, just one week after Palm Sunday) is the most revered Christian holiday of the year. Of course, this is the remembrance celebration of Jesus Christ rising from the dead, signifying defeat of death itself and providing rebirth and eternal salvation of all who will ever believe in Him.
THREE: Summer youth programs. Vacation Bible Schools, youth camps, retreats and other youth focused events are 2 months away from starting. The time to start planning an extra layer of protection is now. Christians, I believe more than any people group, would die or kill for their children and grandchildren.
Think About it
Whether you and your congregation are in favor of the current actions to topple Iran or not, doesn’t change the fact that there is a large people group fiercely opposed to those efforts. An unusually large portion of those opposed, fiercely support and justify violence to make their points. To many of them it is an Islam vs. Christianity (and / or Israeli) war.
The dates and demographics of interest to them are the dates and demographics we hold dear.
Don’t just talk about readiness, plan for it. Watch the things that have happened and are happening around the world.
Pay attention and plan accordingly.
Plan as if it will happen – not as if it could happen (and certainly not as “it won’t happen”).
