For years, my cousin has leased our farm to run his cow/calf operation. He does all the branding, transporting, doctoring, selling, and (most critically) buying. I call him when something’s wrong or I don’t get a full count on cows or calves. I keep the fences and gates up and make sure they have water, mineral, and good grass (often moving them to new fields).
This August, a cow came up missing. That’s a big deal. It’s not uncommon for old cows to die, but this was no old cow. Usually, when a cow (or calf) dies, birds and coyotes reveal the location of the body. We got nothing. After several days of not finding her, I concluded she was dead, with no trace. I called my cousin to report 2H9 missing. He came out and looked himself and finally resigned to the fact she was dead.
This past week, I saw something in the distance on a neighbor’s place that was bigger than a deer. Binoculars confirmed it was a cow, but I knew that neighbor (who lives in Colorado) had no cattle in that pasture.
It's a big rough pasture with high cliffs, arroyos, badlands, and lots of trees. I exchanged my pickup for the UTV back at the house and headed into the neighbor’s pasture.
When I made it to her, I couldn’t believe my eyes. It was 2H9.
Think About it
Then Jesus told them this parable: “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’” [i]
There aren’t many sheep in this country, and I couldn’t hoist that mama cow up on my shoulders, but I could finally relate to the joy talked of in that scripture when I got her back in the pasture with her own herd. When she saw them, she bucked and threw her head around like a playful calf as she ran to them.
It illustrated what makes church security different from any other security. To win one over is so much better than winning over them.
