I once heard an expert on bombings, say there had never been a bomb threat that turned into an actual explosion in America. I repeated it a few times to my audiences.
I didn’t question his statement, but he was wrong. Research the 1/19/1975 State Department bombing in Washington DC and the 8/26/1980 Harvey’s Hotel / Casino in Stateline, Nevada for examples. I’m sure there were more, but these 2 easy to find examples made me very cautious about what and who I quote.
Bombs and bomb threats have increased recently. It is time for churches to take notice and take threats seriously.
On Saturday, 11/24/1917, at the Italian Evangelical Mission Church in Milwaukee, WI, a 10-year-old girl reported a suspicious looking device outside the church about 09:00 that morning.
Many who saw it later commented that it looked too intentional to have been a discarded item. The paper-wrapped object was about 14” long X 9” wide X 9” tall and very heavy.
After being carried into the church basement, police were contacted about 5:20 pm.
After nearly an hour with no police response, church workers decided the next best thing was to get a neighbor boy to carry it to the police station.
Finding it too heavy for himself to handle, the neighbor boy got a friend to help. The 2 boys carried it to the police station.
Police were busy (evening roll call was being conducted). When desk sergeant Henry Deckett saw what the boys had carried in, he thought it looked suspicious, so he told the boys to stay put while he took it to his superior’s office.
His superior told him to get rid of it (offering no clarity). Deckett took it to the squad room.
He sat it on the table in the middle of the room as officers milled all around (some examining the suspicious package).
9 officers and 1 civilian lost their lives in an instant. One of the officer’s watch was found with the hour and minute hands stuck at 7:43 (PM) – which became the official record of the time of the explosion.
Until 9/11, this was the most police officers ever killed in a single incident.
Think About it…
Take threats and suspicious packages seriously. Have plans for off-hours and during services.
