Congregation Beth El in Rutherford, N.J. suffered a catastrophic fire in the early morning hours of Friday, August 8th. The Rabbi and his family barely escaped with their lives.
While an investigation is underway, there does not appear to have been any criminal activity involved.
What was moving to me however was the Rabbi’s response to this life-altering trauma. He is so thankful his family is OK, even though the building and contents are destroyed. He was quoted by news agencies as saying, “I want to say thank you, God, for sparing my life and sparing my family.”
When something traumatic happens, you can convince yourself you are a victim. You can convince yourself (and possibly others) that you were wronged. You should pursue legal action when a crime caused your pain.
I do not believe however anything should ever make us make us accept the “victim” label. Especially when no lives were lost. That is a good time to be mindful of what was lost, and who was saved.
