Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few.” [i]
I grew up in, and have now returned to, rural Kansas. The Wheat State. The “Breadbasket of the World.” Kansas produces about 20% of wheat harvested in the U.S.
That harvest scripture is understood here. It speaks of the urgency and “all hands on deck” impact of the wheat harvest.
Our soil is well suited for high protein wheat. Every good bushel has about 1 million wheat kernels; enough grain to turn into 42 pounds of white or 60 pounds of whole wheat flour.
Harvest comes mid-June through mid-July starting in the southeast part of Kansas and ending in the northwest. In that short amount of time, 328 million bushels of wheat will be harvested from 8-1/2 million acres across the state at a pace of about 30 feet wide and 4 mph.
To get good quality wheat requires a lot to happen the right way at the right time. When it’s time to plant new wheat (in the Fall), the ground condition must have the right temperature and moisture content. Weed, pest and disease control until harvest is critical.
It isn’t just the days of harvest; it is the specific time of day. It’s not an 08:00 to 5:00 job. Due to the optimal moisture content in the grain, you may only be able to cut wheat from 3:00 PM to 3:00 AM. To keep the combines cutting when they can, takes a host of other people running other machinery. And you need to get all of it done before the rains come again which could render any uncut wheat useless.
Being a good neighbor is part of rural living. When a neighbor is in the crunch of wheat harvest, it’s customary that anyone who can, shows up to help.
Think about it
It is vital that all machinery is running right before harvest begins. You enter the intense season with everything and everyone in tip-top shape.
In security, you never know when the intense season will come. We do know however, that we have lots of time to train and refine gear during non-intense times. Take advantage of that time to make sure you are ready, willing and able when needed.
Go into the intense season with everything and everyone in tip-top shape.
