Investigators are pouring through evidence of a fire reported at 1:30 AM Monday 4/28/25 morning at the historic Clayborn Temple in Downtown Memphis. The Calyborn Temple was a common rallying site for MLK Jr and other Civil Rights leaders in the 1960’s. Though it was undergoing renovations, it appears to now be destroyed.
While the fire could have been caused by activities related to the restoration and / or condition of the building, I am willing to bet it is arson.
Fire is a commonly used tool of bias against any form of religion or people group. Since so many fires at churches are arson based, I will be surprised if this was not arson by someone who despises the success and value of African Americans. It could even be “fake hate” (set by someone who wants the community to believe a racist did it), but that would still be arson. I wrote in 2012 (in the book, Evil Invades Sanctuary) to, “Be aware that any fire or talk of fire or explosives around your ministry should result in immediate security attention.”
