I was recently inspired to study the first words of Jesus recorded in each of the gospels.
In the account of Matthew, it occurred as Jesus approached John to be baptized. In this case, the first recorded words of Jesus were in response to John’s statement, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” [i]
Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented. [ii]
In Mark it occurred just as John the Baptist had been put into prison. Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” [iii]
In Luke is the youngest Jesus we ever hear from (12 years old). Joseph and Mary had taken Jesus to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Tabernacle. When they realized Jesus was not among any in their group returning to Nazareth, they returned to Jerusalem. They finally (the third day) found Him in the temple courts listening to, and asking questions of, the teachers there. They heard a lot more than we read, because Luke tells us, “Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers.”
As in Matthew, His first recorded words here were an answer to a question. His mother had asked, “Son, why have You done this to us?” So, the first recorded words of Jesus in Luke were, “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?” [iv]
In John it was a question from Jesus that is the first recorded words. This occurred just as 2 of John the Baptist’s disciples heard him say (about Jesus), “Look, the Lamb of God!” When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?” [v]
Think About it
You have followed Christ’s call on your life to serve your ministry in protection.
Now that you are following Him in that regard, how would you respond if He asks, “What do you want?”
I think we should all be constantly ready for that question from Jesus.
