Responsible defenders must be ready, willing and able to prevent and / or overcome evil.
READY: You are there. Present. You show up. You are both physically and spiritually present.
Consider the famous battle when Judah defeated Moab and Ammon. God told Jehoshaphat (all caps by me for illustration), “…do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s. Tomorrow MARCH DOWN against them... TAKE UP YOUR POSITIONS; STAND FIRM and see the deliverance... Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. GO OUT TO FACE THEM tomorrow...’”[i]
In all my years growing up in the church I never once heard the emphasis on what God was REQUIRING OF THE MEN – I only heard they didn’t have to fight, that God did that for them. He did, but their presence was required.
WILLING: In Luke 14, Jesus describes the cost of your calling. In the 28th verse of that passage, he suggests (NIV), “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?”
Take your wife and walk her through your home. Pause at the family pictures on the wall.
To serve in the realm of security at your church, you are risking it all. Are you that willing to protect others? You don’t have the Qualified Immunity of a law-enforcement officer and a county attorney ready to defend you against criminal or civil actions against you after you stop evil.
You can’t make that decision at the bang. That stake must be driven firmly in the ground before you show up. Can you do, what must be done, in a life threatening situation?
ABLE: This means you are both trained and equipped. Just because you are willing and present doesn’t mean you are able. If you are not able, the risks (as mentioned above) are greater. Not only are the risks greater to you, they are greater to potential victims because you have not been genuinely trained and equipped.
If you are not training and properly equipped, you may as well carry a sign, “It won’t happen here” because that is what you truly believe.
Think About it
Ready.
Willing.
Able.
Each one of those single words is a full book.
Are you ready, willing and able?
[i] 2 Chronicles 20; 15-17 (NIV)
