The NEWS story reads, “With Christmas only a week away, his family is planning a funeral instead of enjoying the holidays.” 1 year old Leo Amir Weathers was shot and killed during a shooting that erupted outside his mama’s home in the Memphis, TN metro area as he slept at 2:00 AM on Saturday 12/16/23.
In the articles I read of the violence that took little Leo’s life, most of the accompanying pictures and narratives were of gun counters, firearms, ammunition boxes and calls for gun laws.
As a distraught Memphis community leader expressed to me this week,
When violence between citizens in Memphis takes a life, the outcry is against the guns. But when police shoot (or even arrest) gangbangers (most likely, like those who killed the little boy), the outcry is against the police.
Think About it
I really wish I could be cheery and bright with the season. And there is a lot I am thankful for, as I know you are too.
But there is a lot of work to do. We are in a culture that doesn’t want anyone to stop evil.
They don’t even want the word evil used in describing those bent on doing wrong. But bad guys are going to keep doing what they do, regardless of laws – even during the holidays.
Meanwhile, the violence continues in Memphis and around the world. Good guys will keep doing what they do because bad guys will keep doing what they do.
Do not weary of doing good. [i]
