I know a man quite purposely driven about developing relationships with his grandchildren. As part of his grandparenting plan, he has done something special with each grandson when they turned 16. His oldest grandson took an interest in hunting, so for that boy’s 16th year, a high country elk hunt was enjoyed.
The next oldest grandson heard his older cousin’s hunting stories and knew his grandpa was planning something special for his 16th year too. For a season leading up to his 16th year, that boy was thinking he might want to get into hunting.
As the time neared, he went to his grandpa one day informing him he had been researching rifle calibers. His research method was asking his friends in school.
Consider the circle of friends contributing to his advice. 15-year-old boys are experts in anything you want to ask them about. So, he was convinced (by the expert advice of Kansas high-school sophomores) that a 30-30 was ideal for rifle hunting in Colorado.
His Grandpa had to replace some damaging momentum.
Think About it
I also know a man who carries a Taurus Judge (with .410 shotshells) for church security because other “experts” convinced him it is the ideal weapon for such service.
It is easy for anyone to write anything about themselves on an advertisement or a website. Do they truly have experience in faith-based security? It is one of the most unique circles to serve in. Just because someone has served in a protective role, doesn’t mean they are ready to get on the top ten trainers list.
I totally understand everyone starts with no experience. When I see a new name flash on the radar of trainers however, listing all their high level duty of serving in the protective arena, I am suspect at best. I’ve seen experts in protection speak as if they knew church security operations, while the first time they were in a church was after learning of this "budding opportunity” of church security. Doctors can talk with authority on the human anatomy. But if I were to seek a surgeon for a knee replacement, I don’t want someone who can simply speak with persuasive expertise on setting broken bones but never done a knee replacement.
Who are you getting advice from? Many get it from Sophomore friends. Nothing against Sophomores but let them at least graduate before they start training.
