Living back in farm country and getting back into that way of life, I am more aware of the things that make a difference in farming (and life).
Driving down the road leading to our farm recently, I saw stark contrasts between fields. Some are so full of their intended crop there are no weeds. Others are so badly taken by weeds it will take years and serious effort to turn them around into anything productive.
Weeds have been with us for thousands of years. Some feel Job was written before Moses and therefore the oldest scriptures. If that is the case, weeds are discussed there in chapter 31, verse 40.
“Let thorns grow instead of wheat, and foul weeds instead of barley.”
If Genesis is the oldest (as claimed by most) weeds show up there too, in chapter 3, verses 17 & 18.
“…cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you…”
It would be so nice if we could just pray away the weeds. I’m certain many have asked and maybe God has occasionally granted some requester(s) that answer for a season. By and large however, weeds are something all farmers are left to deal with.
Whether managed by manual pulling, mechanical equipment, chemical sprays or goat herds, weeds are never done and gone. A new crop is always just under the ground ready to sprout up. It’s been that way for at least 6,000 years with no end in sight.
Christ spoke of wayward people as weeds in Matthew 13, verses 37-39 (and other places too).
“…the one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. The field is the world, and the good seed is the sons of the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one, and the enemy who sowed them is the devil…”
Think About it
I really appreciate all the efforts being made to educate people before they become criminals. I wish those folks the very best in all they do to keep people from doing harm. Society is better due to their efforts.
Just don’t let anyone tell you there is no need for protection because of the work being done in prevention.
There will always be weeds.
