This Labor Day weekend my wife and I joined our extended Chinn family for our 67th annual Chinn Family Reunion. We often have over 100 people at our reunions.
The term, “family”, like most words, has multiple meanings. According to Mirriam Webster, the 1st listed definition is;
the basic unit in society traditionally consisting of two parents rearing their children
The very next follow-up definition by Mirriam Webster is;
any of various social units differing from but regarded as equivalent to the traditional family
None in my family are as treasured by my wife and I, as our own children and their children and grandchildren. We are blessed with 23 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
The next most treasured are my own 2 brothers and my wife’s parents (my parents are now enjoying the ultimate reward of a heavenly home).
Next would be our extended family. We are camped this weekend on a Colorado ranch owned by our son’s father-in-law. I was friends with that rancher before his daughter and our son became interested in each other – now he too is extended family.
So, this weekend we are enjoying many layers of family.
Of course there are disagreements in our family, some are Christian, some not; some liberal, some conservative; some Democrat, some Republican. But family is not defined by differences.
Think About it
One of the best aspects of family was recorded when Jesus said (to John), “This is your mother…”[i] That model of adopting our church family as our own was declared by this and other statements from Jesus Himself.
Furthermore, we are charged by Paul that, “But if any provide not for his own, and especially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.”[ii]
We love our families enough to protect them. All of them.
