I gave my life to Christ in 1979. I knew then, I would never again say another cuss word (just one example of things I would never do again).
Then one day while installing a heavy air-conditioner in a window of our Kansas home, it slipped and fell on one finger.
Words.
A few days later, we had just stacked a load of hay bales and were heading back out to the field to get more. Looking forward, riding on the empty hay machine roaring down the road, I saw a piece of alfalfa break loose from the machinery in front of me and come blowing towards me. I caught it in my mouth and began to chew. It became immediately clear it wasn’t hay. It was a wasp. I went ballistic getting him out of my mouth, but he had already scored a direct hit on my tongue.
More words.
Though I looked (and sounded) ridiculous with a huge tongue swelling out of my mouth, with a few prayers and water, the pain quickly subsided. The whole hay crew enjoyed my misery.
The very next day, we were heading from another hay field towards another barn with the hay machine loaded. I climbed up on top of the stack to cool down in the wind as we drove towards the barn 2 miles away.
Ahead of us, I saw a big bumble bee rise out of the road ditch. I looked away, then looked back. We were rolling a good 30 MPH towards the bee who was flying Mach II towards me. I couldn’t move away fast enough. He dropped a direct hit on my bottom lip.
More words.
The pain and swelling were worse. My lip swelled as big as my tongue the day before. More hay crew enjoyment of my plight.
I was certain my words from the smashed finger incident had resulted in God’s judgment using bees.
I prayed. I listened. I heard.
It wasn’t the cussing God didn’t like. It was the many criticisms I had voiced of others.
Think About it
We are in the business of stopping evil. Hate what God hates and fight it. But avoid petty squabbles.
Keep fighting the things you should fight and leave your co-warriors alone. Do not tolerate discord from me or others.
Study Psalm 97:10, 1 John 2:11 and (especially) Proverbs 6:16-19.
