Any mega-church security director will confirm that mental health issues are one of the most common things they deal with week in and week out. Hurting people hurt people. But just because someone is hurting does not mean they will hurt others.
Having a working understanding of mental health is one of the things our summit planning committee feels is a top priority to include in any significant event, especially the SOS.
The best many of us have ever heard address this issue is Dr. Priscilla Clancy. We know her as Kris. Kris is a licensed psychologist who will be presenting both a 4-hour pre-event training as well as some 1-hour breakouts on mental health issues. There is still time (even after you hear her on Saturday) to sign up for her Wednesday Afternoon (7/22/26) Pre-event intensive named, “From Recognition to Response: Practical Mental Health Skills for Church Security Teams.”
Those of you who have a family member with a mental disorder, know first-hand how you live with concern that your loved one is treated fairly, even when they act out. I thought my own family had been gracefully protected from anything along those lines.
Then, in 1992, my own Dad, a man who was a monument to our family and community, began slipping into Alzheimer’s; a word I wish I didn’t know how to spell.
Knowing how some authorities (mostly hospital staff on those really bad days) dealt with him in the journey of his long goodbye, still causes a quiver in my talk.
Thankfully, law-enforcement in our community were trained on mental health crisis. We want every church security operator to be trained on mental health too.
If you can do nothing but attend the Sheepdog Coffee on Saturday, 7/18/26, please do so. But if you are coming to SOS.26, please consider signing up for Kris’s pre-event intensive on Wednesday 7/22/26 or one of her shorter version breakouts on Thursday and Friday.
She will be teaching breakouts on;
